CANVA: GUIDE TO DESIGN FROM SCRATCH
1. Choose the right dimensions for your design
To begin, go to the Canva site and select a design type. These are optimized for each graphic, whether it’s a social media post, a flyer, or something else entirely. Custom dimensions can also be found by searching for ‘custom size.’ Pixels, millimeters, and inches are all options.
2. Choose a background
First and foremost, the background for your design could be either a color or an image.
Background colors
Colors convey a variety of messages. Individuality is related to purple, activity is associated with orange, and nature is associated with green. Use the Color Picker tool in the toolbar at the top of the editor to select a color.
Background photos
Before you can use a photo as a background, you must first create a grid. Photos can be scaled, cropped, inverted, and stacked once they’ve been arranged on a grid to produce a variety of aesthetic effects. Next, look for images online or upload your own. Then, using your mouse, drag and drop your image onto the grid. You can use filters to alter the photo’s brightness, saturation, and clarity. The message of the text is supported with a background graphic. It’s difficult to overlay things like text or illustrations if there’s too much going on in the backdrop. Consider texture over structure when selecting a backdrop image for your design.
3. Add your elements
Text, symbols, photographs, and graphics could all be part of your design. These must be mixed in a visually appealing manner. Take into account the design’s overall balance and composition. When you’re arranging your elements, consider whether they’re balanced. Are they in the middle? Also, make sure they aren’t too close to any other items or the page’s edge. To see what works best, experiment with size, color, and positioning. Use one of Canva’s frames to incorporate a photo into your design. These can be found in the side panel under the heading “elements.” Use negative space to your advantage. Any region within a design that is free of text, graphics, or embellishments is known as negative space, often known as white space. It’s popular among designers since it can aid with grouping, emphasis, and legibility.
4. Choose the right fonts
The appearance of your fonts can have a significant impact on the look of your design. Take a look at this amusing typeface, which would be ideal for a fun cosmetics brand. For a law firm, this isn’t ideal.
It’s difficult enough to pick just one typeface. However, your design may necessitate the use of multiple typefaces. Canva recommends using no more than two typefaces in a design since too many fonts might make a design appear “messy.”
There are hundreds of pre-set font combinations available in Canva. These can be found on the Text tab of the side panel. Don’t overlook readability. Your fonts can detract from your message if they’re too intricate. The value of distinct design elements is determined by the typographic hierarchy. You may radically alter the way your message is received by using multiple fonts, colors, and scales on your text.
