Introduction

Legend has it that when King Shiva handed over his Atma Linga to Ravana he rejoiced at his remorse. The king of demons would take Atma Linga to his home in Sri Lanka and he would gain great power. The gods wanted to prevent this and sent King Ganesh in the form of a young boy to stop Ravana. King Ganesh tricked Ravana into putting Atma Linga on the ground, after which he could not raise or move the Ring. That place today is the Mahabaleshwar temple in Gokarna where the Atma Linga of Shiva is worshiped by millions of pilgrims descending on the temple city.
In the years that followed Gokarna attracted hordes of hippies who were drawn to peaceful beaches. They came up with their own music and art that can be seen on the city art street. Today Gokarna is a bustling city. On the one hand, it is a place of tourism and on the other hand, it is a walking paradise and a quiet resting and refreshing atmosphere.
